'Sinners' Officially Concedes #1 Box Office Record to 2026's New Horror Darling

It's hard coming into every year what movies will perform well and what will fall short of expectations, and by the time December comes around, there are always a few surprise hits and shocking bombs. Looking back at 2025, one of the most unexpected success stories of the year both at the box office and the Oscars was Sinners, the vampire horror film directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. Coogler is widely hailed as one of the best working directors in Hollywood right now, but a $90 million budget for an original vampire movie in an era where movie fans are reluctant to show up to theaters was certainly a gamble, no matter how you slice it. The film proved to be more than worth the investment, though, grossing $370 million at the global box office and even winning four Oscars at the 2026 Academy Awards.
