One of ABC's Most Influential Sitcoms Is Taking Over Streaming 37 Years Later




They just don't make comedy shows like they used to anymore. Shows like Widow's Bay or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, have a darker edge. Outside of a few underseen network shows, family sitcoms are no longer a priority. Back in the 90s, however, this was not the case. During the dominance of the big four networks, half-hour comedies thrived. On Thursday nights, NBC's TV lineup consisted of Seinfeld, Friends, and Frasier, which dominated the network for years, and they weren't the only ones. The next night, on ABC, more family-oriented shows, like Step by Step and Full House, ruled the TGIF night. But the biggest and best of the bunch was Family Matters. And today, almost four decades after its debut, it's still a hit as it tops the charts on Apple TV Store.
