Although born in Queens, Magnussen spent the majority of his childhood and college years in Georgia and North Carolina. "Growing up in Georgia, I thought I was going to go to like Auburn [University] or something like that." Acting wasn't initially something he dreamed of for himself. Thanks to teachers who saw his talent for acting, he pivoted and attended the North Carolina School of the Arts. "I didn't know what I was going to pursue or do with my life. And then, they recognized there was some sort of talent there. They were like, you've got to pursue this. You've got to keep going. Just keep going. I was like, 'OK.'"
