With Christopher Nolan having moved away from sci-fi for the time being and the genre's biggest hit this year being a feel-good space adventure, Project Hail Mary, there seems to be a gap in the market for the sort of cerebral projects that defined the genre for decades. Nolan established himself with The Dark Knight trilogy, but received greater acclaim for films such as Interstellar and Inception. During that same period, Denis Villeneuve made Arrivaland Blade Runner 2049, and is now on the verge of concluding his epic Dune trilogy. Villeneuve's Dune movies are perhaps the best-reviewed sci-fi titles in over two decades; the trilogy is certainly the most influential of its kind since the Wachowskisiblings burst onto the scene in the late 1990s.
