13 Years Later, Guillermo del Toro's Sci-Fi Powerhouse Is a Global Streaming Sleeper Hit

2026 has been a quiet year so far for Guillermo del Toro, but the success of his last movie was more than enough to carry him into the year still riding high. Del Toro guided Jacob Elordi to his first Oscar-nominated performance in Frankenstein, which won three Oscars and was nominated in six other categories. Despite other big names like Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth all starring in the film, Netflix opted not to give Frankenstein a wide theatrical release, which still proves upsetting for fans, even to this day. Frankenstein was del Toro's first movie in three years, when he previously wrote and directed Pinocchio, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. Pinocchio has since found a streaming home alongside Frankenstein on Netflix, but like its successor, it was only released in select theaters, grossing only $100,000 during its entire run.
