By the 1970s, record labels had a pretty clear idea of what they wanted from artists, what would sell and what would fail. Or so they thought. For a long time, they insisted on formulas, pushing previously approved singles on bands to make them hits. But these artists were innovators, and they knew their songs were special, even if they didn't adhere to the "rules" of how to write a hit song.
