Pixar's 5-Part Fantasy Franchise Is Taking Over Disney+ as New Toy Story Shatters Records

Fireworks erupted at the box office this weekend when Toy Story 5delivered a record-breaking $312 million debut. The fifth installment in the culture-defining franchise grossed approximately $160 million at the domestic box office in the first three days of its release, which represents the second-biggest debut in Pixar's history behind Incredibles 2's $182 million opening weekend haul. The legendary animation house has had its share of struggles in recent years, with a string of underperformers that led to layoffs and restructuring. Pixar bounced back in 2024 with its biggest hit ever, Inside Out 2, which grossed around $1.7 billion worldwide. However, the studio's last two releases — Elioand Hoppers — underperformed in comparison not only to Inside Out 2, but also to most of Pixar's heyday hits. The audience's message is clear: more sequels. And this was reflected in the success that the Toy Story franchise saw in conjunction with the new movie's record-breaking box-office performance.
