Serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter appeared first in Red Dragon, Thomas Harris' 1981 novel, as a supporting, but pivotal, character who serves as a consultant for FBI profiler Will Graham in his pursuit of the "Tooth Fairy" from behind bars. A sociopath, for lack of a better word, given he exhibits none of the criteria associated with the term, with an intellect and sophistication that hides the monster within.
