'A Quiet Place' Meets 'War of the Worlds' in Netflix's Newest Sci-Fi Smash-Hit

Netflix is successfully pivoting away from big-budget original movies such as Red Notice, The Gray Man, and The Electric State, which cost a combined total of around $1 billion to produce but didn't spawn sequels like they were supposed to. Following the lukewarm reception of such films, the streamer decided to focus on smaller-scale tentpoles headlined by stars. Earlier this year, it delivered the mega-hit features The Rip, War Machine, Thrash, and Apex. These movies leveraged the star power of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Alan Ritchson, Phoebe Dynevor, Charlize Theron, and Taron Egerton to maximum effect. War Machine turned out to be one of Netflix's 10 most-watched English-language originals of all time. This past Friday, the streamer debuted its latest mid-budget tentpole to instant success.
