The Old West was a time of infamous outlaws and towering lawmen alike. On the side of order, figures like Wyatt Earp, "Wild Bill" Hickok, and "Doc" Holliday became legends that have long captured the imagination of Americans of all ages. Their stories have been the fuel for plenty of Westerns over the years, either more directly, like with Tombstone and Wild Bill, or indirectly, like in the acclaimed series Deadwood. Even among them, few lawmen cast quite the long shadow as the great Bass Reeves, one of the first Black Deputy U.S. Marshals west of the Mississippi, with a staggering record of over 3,000 arrests to his name.
